The atmospheric water cycle is a central component of the climate system. The transport of humidity from the regions of oceanic or continental surface evaporation redistributes latent energy and provides the necessary moisture input for precipitation. To study in detail this atmospheric water vapor transport, we use a set of numerical methods. Water Isotopes and Climate Workshop. October 1, 2019 to October 3, 2019. Although δ 18 O has been primarily interpreted as a proxy for local air temperature, isotope‐enabled climate models have established that there are many nonlocal and nontemperature‐related climatic influences on isotopic signals at coring locations. . δ 18 O, a measure of the ratio of the oxygen isotopes oxygen‐18 and oxygen‐16, has been used primarily as a proxy for local temperature in the mid to high‐latitudes and for local precipitation in the tropics [e.g., Dansgaard, 1964; Jouzel et al., 1997]. The workshop aims to gather scientists with different scientific background (hydrology, ecology, plant physiology, soil science, remote sensing, …) but common research interests in using stable isotopes of water as tracers to study the cycling of water through the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Water vapor gradually loses 18 O as it travels from the equator to the poles. Because water molecules with heavy 18 O isotopes in them condense more easily than normal water molecules, air becomes progressively depleted in 18 O as it travels to high latitudes and becomes colder and drier.
