The Atom Smasher (the world's first Industrial Van de Graaff generator) was built by Westinghouse Research Labs in 1937. Dismantled in 2014-15; efforts to rebuild continued through 2019. Westinghouse in 1947 formed the Department of Electronics and Nuclear Physics, and its Shippingport reactor went online in 1957, becoming the country's first commercial nuclear generator.

The Westinghouse Atom Smasher was a 5 MeV Van de Graaff electrostatic nuclear accelerator operated by the Westinghouse Electric Corporation at their Research Laboratories in Forest Hills, Pennsylvania.
